Kit Marlowe, the English dramatist, was murdered in 1593. The details of his stabbing are disputed. At the time it was said he died in a drunken bar brawl, but it appears he had been in seclusion all day in a private house with two well-known underworld figures who were loan-sharks and standover men. He may then have been killed over money. However, it came only a few days after his arrest for Heresy (it seems to have been a bad day for heretics). Marlowe was said to be an atheist - not something to be known publicly as in 16th century England. The dubious details of his "murder" and the similarities between his work and Shakespear, added to the question of who Shakespeare actually was, have all lead a considerable number of people to argue that Marlowe faked his death and then wrote under the pseudonym Shakespeare.
