We used to play this club but we've been promoted out of their division now. However, I'm still mates with some of their players and keep up with them
on Facebook. Here is the website. The match report of their second game, last weekend, is
quite funny.

I didn't play last week but Arthuret & Esk scored 132 batting first and we managed to knock them off without too many dramas, apparently.
Today's match is off. The rain has stopped right now (though more is forecast later) but it's been a wet week and the pitch is too soft to play on and the outfield still very wet which isn't really safe to play on. So much for the hot dry summer we have been promised!

Damn! I was worried they might cancel it. Yeah...the weather is the real pits here too this year.

I wasn't playing this week, as I had to work. Despite the unsettled weather they got a game in, but lost. Nunwick made about 180 and we only got 100.

Played today, we won against 9-man Shap. Pitch was more suitable for swamp racers than cricket but on a damp and soft track we inserted them and bowled them
out for 122. if we'd held all the catches we should have it would have been about 75 or 80. Martyn asked me to bowl right at the end but for several
reasons I said no. Kuzzy got chucked the ball instead and went for 19 in the one over. I din't know where to put myself.
Anyway, Andy got out for 31 but Kuzzy 66* and J-K 20* saw us comfortably home with plenty of overs to spare. "I tend to think that cricket is the greatest thing that God ever created on earth - certainly greater than sex, although sex isn`t too bad either" Harold Pinter Bible Babble

I haven't had a game since then, it's either been raining or I had to work, like on Saturday. We are doing OK in the league (won 3, lost 1, 1 no
result, 2 rained off) but lost in our first cup game at the weekend. We made 193 but we are still a bit light in the bowling department this year and were
unable to defend what looked a good total.
Sunday sees us away at Culgaith. Many key players are unavailable and assuming we play (the forecast is good) I should get a bowl this week. Culgaith are not doing very well this season so we are still expecting to win even with a weak side. I'll let you know what happens. Away at Culgaith
We won by nearly 100 runs. We lost the toss and were inserted, and we made 135 all out after about 37 overs - we reckoned about 50 runs short of par, given the poor bowling we were facing. However, the pitch offered a bit to the bowler with some inconsistent bounce (and a trigger-happy official umpire) so if we kept it full and straight we knew we could give them some problems. Dave pulled his hamstring/calf, so was limping like fuck, and Watty, JK and JT were sawn off by the umpire. I was last man in, blocked a good length ball then tried to pull the next delivery, but I got a top edge and a duck. We were looking at 180-200 after 25 overs but collapsed to 135. Dick made 49 for a second time and was gutted when he found out. Tea was pathetic, nearly no savouries, just a few limp sandwiches which went very quickly, though there was a lot of cake. Andy started badly with a wayward over that was thrashed about, but then Watty bowled a maiden of shortish, fast, bouncy stuff that was a sign of things to come. Andy took a wicket with an LBW shout on the ankle of the back leg of the opening batsman and then Watty had one land betwixt grille and helmet of the next batter, opening up a fair old gash that needed stitches. He retired hurt and the number XI took him to A&E while Andy proceeded to get 6-23! With only 12 overs on the board they were on 45 with 8 down, one retired hurt and the last man driving the retired hurt player back from the hospital. They'd only just left the hospital so we took drinks (not enough orange to go around!) but when they hadn't appeared the game was declared a win for us by 95 runs. We were in 3rd going into this weekend. Depending on other results we could be 2nd place - a promotion spot - after this week, at about half-way through the season. No game last week, as it was arranged that way. Most of the last were on a drink, drugs and whores weekend in Amsterdam.
This week we beat Kirby Stephen, the return fixture from our first game of the season. We batted first and made 175-6 off 40 overs. It was tricky batting, inconsistent bounce on a slightly damp, drying pitch, with massive swing in the humid conditions and movement off the wicket, too. With wickets in hand at 25 overs we wanted 200+, but we had a mini-collapse and ended up a little short. We have failed to pace our innings to maximum effect a few times. Martyn got 50-something not-out, and Jonny Kidd got 47. He got 46 against them in the first game, and is still in search of his maiden senior 50, so we were a bit gutted for him. I did not bat. In the field we had them over the barrel at 3 down for just 5 runs after 6 overs. After 10 they only had 8 on the board, but a mini-stand between Hook (their all-rounder captain) and the man who ran him out got them within sight of respectability. Then it started to rain... We played at Kirby Stephen in the rain and only came off when it started to hail, in the near-dark, with thunder and lightning. At 6-down they wanted to come off but we weren't having it. Anyway, Martyn finished off 9, 10, Jack quickly in what I think was the 25th over, with them still over 100 runs short. I missed a fairly routine run-out (3" to the right of the 3 stumps I was aiming at from about 15 yds) but managed an amazing slide-stop to save 3 runs an over later. Bloody good game, a little bitter in the end, but great banter early on, even when they were 3 for 5! Up at Longtown (Arthuret & Esk) next week. Home to Kirby Stephen today
While they search for a lost ball, Martyn does a bit of "gardening"
Hot and humid to start with, the ball was swinging bloody miles
At the Shepherd's Inn. Nowhere to sit down for our post-match pint though, as all the tables were set for dining!
Victory is sweet! We played the last few overs in the rain, but were determined to get a finish. KS weren't so keen though. We had them over a barrel at 3 wickets down for 5 runs in 6 overs. They still only had 8 runs after 10 overs! I was watching the rain come over and knew we needed to get a move-on though, and when it started to rain they were only 4 or 5 wickets down. It was getting a bit heavy in the end, but I felt it was a bit crap of them wanting to come off still when their last man was coming on to bat. He went next ball...

I got hit in the face with a cricket ball batting in the nets last night, the first time I've ever been hit in the head. It was very much like getting
punched in the nose - a bit of a shock (I'm normally somewhat numb with beer and certainly expecting it when I have a fight) but not too bad. I felt fine
after I'd blown it a couple of times to clear the blood away...

Away at Arthuret & Esk (Longtown) today. We lost the toss and were asked to bowl. We started well, keeping them down to about 2 an over and leaving them 2
down after 10 overs. However, we failed to dislodge the other opener early and they started to make a good stand, aided by some lacklustre fielding and missed
chances.
We knew we were always going to be a bit light on the bowling (we had a bit of a "B" team this week anyway, with a #11 [who went in at 9!] who hasn't played before as well as Bob Bell who only plays now when we're desperate) and Martyn was telling me to warm up after about 10 overs which was never a good sign. He and JK tried bowling spin in tandem after Watty was inexplicably pulled off (and Andy was blowing a bit at the other end after his long opening spell - too many beers and pies!) and although JK bowled well he was giving away a 4-ball an over, while Martyn wasn't on form either, a load of full-tosses. So anyway, I got thrown the ball. The first ball was... well, it was very, very wide down the leg side but I got into a rhythm going and had 1 for 21 off 4 overs. I was expecting Watty to come back on but I ended up bowling through, despite me telling Martyn I was fucked with a couple of overs still to bowl. My last over which included a wide and a beamer went for 20 runs giving them 167 and rather spoiling my figures. I finished up with 1 for 55 off the 8 overs. We set off at a steady pace scoring at about 2 point something an over for the first seven overs or so then our openers, pegged back with a couple of maidens (tight bowling to a packed offside field, got themselves out. JK got a duck, Dickie took a long time to get off the mark and ended on 9 and when I went in we were on about 80 for 9. I got a fast one that came back a bit at me and was adjudged LBW. At least the tea was good. BTW, it was my first wicket in league cricket. I've had a few overs in the league before but only taken wickets in friendlies and fun games, so I'm
really quite chuffed, though I'd have been more chuffed if I'd just bowled the four overs and ended with 1 for 21!

Away at Stainton today, Gamblesby made 221, with 115 of those runs coming from the bat of the captain. However, Gamblesby was unable to defend the total.
Stainton I reached the required total for the loss of only 2 wickets and with 3 overs to spare.
